GUWAHATI, Oct. 23: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday informed that a suspect linked to the IED explosion on the railway track near Kokrajhar railway station has been identified and would soon be apprehended.

The chief minister further said that a major disaster was averted after a loco pilot noticed the explosion site in the wee hours of Thursday and alerted the railway authorities.

“The suspect linked to the explosion has multiple cases registered against him in both Assam and Jharkhand. It is highly likely that the Assam Police will soon be able to apprehend the person,” Sarma said.

He however said further investigation would determine whether the suspect was affiliated to any militant outfit or organisation.

“Kokrajhar Police had launched an overnight investigation, and the damaged railway track was repaired the same night, allowing train services on the route to resume normal operations,” the chief minister said.

Meanwhile, Assam director general of police Harmeet Singh reviewed the situation in Kokrajhar while chairing a high-level meeting with senior police officers and security officials.

Speaking to mediapersons after the meeting, Singh informed that a few leads had been found during the investigation, which was underway. He assured that those responsible for the incident would be brought to justice.

Kokrajhar East MLA Lawrence Islary also visited the blast site and sought a thorough probe to identify those attempting to disturb the peace and harmony in Bodoland Territorial Region.
