SHILLONG, Oct 23: The Ministry of Defence has rejected a proposal to acquire land from Hima Maharam for the establishment of a BSF camp in Sohbajram (Photmula), South West Khasi Hills.
KHADC Executive Member in-charge of Land Department, Powell Sohkhlet, disclosed this information while responding to a question from Langrin MDC Pius Marwein (UDP) on the second day of the Council’s Winter Session on Thursday.
Sohkhlet said the Hima Maharam had earlier agreed to provide land for the proposed BSF camp. The EM said the Council had sought clarification from Hima Maharam following media reports and concerns raised by the KSU South West Khasi Hills.
Sohkhlet explained that after discussions in the Hima’s executive council, the Syiem (chief) had gone to meet the BSF DIG who disclosed that the Ministry of Defence had rejected the proposed site due to its proximity to the Bangladesh border.
