SHILLONG, Oct 23: The Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) has come down heavily on the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC), demanding all 30 members to step down over their utter failure in resolving the long-pending issues faced by residents of Lapangap village in West Jaintia Hills.
FKJGP West Jaintia Hills general secretary Nangkhrawbor Rani expressed strong displeasure over the “complete indifference” of the JHADC MDCs towards the concerns of Lapangap residents.
He pointed out that despite the ongoing tension in the area, not a single MDC had visited the village to assess the situation or engage with the affected families.
Rani, who visited Lapangap on Wednesday to extend support to Pnar farmers who resumed their paddy harvesting, said the Council’s inaction amounted to a failure of governance and accountability.
“If they cannot do anything about this issue, it is better for all MDCs to resign immediately,” he asserted.
The FKJGP leader said the villagers, particularly the farmers, have shown remarkable restraint and commitment to peace by continuing their agricultural work despite the uncertainty surrounding the area. He added that the Council’s silence and absence have deepened the sense of neglect among the local population.
The FKJGP also reiterated its support for the farmers and urged the JHADC to intervene immediately to prevent further escalation.
The FKJGP reminded that the Council’s primary duty is to safeguard the rights and well-being of the people under its jurisdiction — a responsibility that has been completely disregarded in the case of Lapangap.
