NIT Meghalaya finds spot in World University Rankings

SHILLONG, Oct 23: The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Meghalaya has debuted in the World University Rankings, securing a position in the 1,201-1,500 band among more than 14,000 participating universities worldwide.
This marks a significant achievement for the institute, which has also maintained its consistent performance in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) for the past eight consecutive years, ranking 83rd nationally this year.
NIT Meghalaya Director Pinakeswar Mahanta told reporters on Thursday that entering the global ranking list was “a great achievement” and it reflected the institute’s growing global academic and research footprint.
“We have also received several recognitions, including the Mahatma Gandhi Award for Academic Excellence and an India Today ranking of 56th among top engineering institutions,” he said.
Highlighting the institute’s research output, Prof. Mahanta said NIT Meghalaya secured nine sponsored projects worth ₹4.9 crore and 33 consultancy projects worth ₹3 crore during the past year. Faculty members published more than 300 research papers in reputed journals and filed four patents.
The institute has also signed 14 national and international MoUs with institutions such as IIT Hyderabad, IIT Madras, IIT Jodhpur, Parul University (Gujarat), PTP Germany, Oxford University (UK), Dot Pad Inc (South Korea), and SCSTE (Meghalaya).
Prof Mahanta further said that NIT Meghalaya has launched a Centre for Teaching the Blind, focusing on computer education and artificial intelligence for visually impaired individuals. Last year, eight visually impaired trainees received certification, and the institute plans to expand the program to train 10-15 participants annually.
The NIT Meghalaya director also said that the institute has a strong placement record, with over 64% of students securing jobs, and 55% receiving multiple offers. The top recruiters include Amazon, Microsoft, BPCL, L&T, Cisco, and Deloitte.
The highest package offered last year was ₹52 lakh per annum, with the average standing at ₹11.75 lakh per annum. Students have also earned global recognition, winning best paper awards and gold medals at international competitions.
Prof. Mahanta said NIT Meghalaya continues to strengthen its focus on semiconductor design, sustainable development, and inclusive technology, reaffirming its commitment to national priorities and global partnerships.
“NIT Meghalaya is emerging as a vibrant hub for education, research, and innovation. Our efforts are aimed at creating global impact while serving local needs,” he added.

NIT M’laya to host 12th Convocation on Oct 30

The NIT Meghalaya will host its 12th convocation at its permanent campus in Saitsohpen, Sohra, on October 30. Former Chairman of Indian Oil Corporation, Shrikant Madhav Vaidya, will grace the occasion as the chief guest, while Prof Dhirendra Nath Buragohain, founder director of NIT Guwahati, will be the guest of honour. The ceremony will be chaired by Sunil Alagh, Chairman of the Board of Governors, NIT Meghalaya.
Addressing reporters on Thursday, NIT Meghalaya Director Prof Pinakeswar Mahanta said that a total of 250 students will receive their degrees during the convocation. These include 150 B.Tech, 36 M.Sc, 24 M.Tech, and 37 Ph.D recipients.
In recognition of outstanding academic performance, 15 medals will be presented, including three female medalists. The awards will comprise the President’s Gold Medal, Chairman’s Gold Medal, and medals for best graduates and branch-wise toppers.
Ahead of the convocation, the institute will also host an alumni meet on the evening of October 29, providing an opportunity for former students to reconnect and engage with the institution’s growth and development.
