SHILLONG, Oct 24: The High Court of Meghalaya on Friday directed the state government to constitute a committee within one week to resolve the disputes regarding cremation and burial of deceased members of various communities inhabiting the state.
During the hearing on a PIL filed by Seng Khasi Hima Crematorium, the bench of Chief Justice Soumen Sen and Justice Wanlura Diengdoh took note of submission by N. Syngkon, Amicus Curiae, that in view of the retirement of Chief Secretary DP Wahlang, the committee formed under the court order dated 07.07.2025 was not reconstituted due to which the report could not be prepared.
The court direct that the committee be constituted within a period of one week and all other directions passed by the Division Bench on 02.09.2025 shall be followed and implemented without further delay.
The court also gave four weeks to the Amicus Curiae to file the report.
During a previous hearing on the PIL, the court took note of the dispute between non-Christian Khasi, Jaintia and Garo tribes and Hindus with regards to sharing of crematoria.
The two-judge bench had observed the lack of a sufficient number of crematoria and burial grounds and the ongoing dispute between various denominations of the Christian faith with regard to sharing of cemeteries.
