SHILLONG, Oct 25: The Border Security Force (BSF) has undertaken a comprehensive vulnerability mapping of sensitive stretches along the Meghalaya-Bangladesh border to curb incidents of trans-border crime and intrusion by Bangladeshi miscreants.
BSF’s Meghalaya Frontier Inspector General, OP Upadhyay, told media persons here on Friday that the overall situation along the international border remains largely satisfactory although the internal situation in Bangladesh continues to be sensitive.
He said the BSF is maintaining a close vigil along all vulnerable patches and has intensified its operations to prevent smuggling, infiltration and other illegal activities.
“We are constantly monitoring the developments across the border and have taken all necessary precautions to ensure peace and stability in the border areas,” Upadhyay said.
He stated that the BSF is increasingly relying on technological solutions, such as modern surveillance systems and drones, to enhance monitoring capabilities in remote and difficult terrains.
These tools, he said, have proven effective in detecting suspicious movements and improving real-time response in critical areas.
Upadhyay said there is no major anti-India sentiment prevailing in Bangladesh but acknowledged that there has been a slight change in the mindset of border residents in certain areas of Bangladesh.
“We have observed some changes in the mindset of border residents on the other side, but both the BSF and the Border Guard Bangladesh are working in close coordination to address any emerging challenges,” the IG added.
He reiterated the commitment of both forces to maintaining cordial relations and ensuring that the border remains peaceful and secure, thus upholding the long-standing spirit of cooperation between the two countries.
Meghalaya shares a 443-km border with Bangladesh. There have been several instances of intrusion by Bangladeshi smugglers and miscreants in the past.
As several stretches of the border remain unfenced, the BSF is counting on its intelligence, technological advancement and support of border population to thwart any attempts of trans-border crime.
