Shillong, Oct 25: The Shooting Association of West Garo Hills organised a one-day free shooting camp at the Don Bosco School Indoor Shooting Range in Tura on Saturday, offering young enthusiasts a first-hand experience of one of India’s fastest-growing precision sports.
The initiative aimed to introduce students to the fundamentals of shooting and familiarize them with the techniques and equipment used by professional marksmen. With over 30 participants from various schools in and around Tura, the event combined basic training with an element of talent identification, as officials sought to scout promising young shooters from the region.According to association officials, the camp was part of a broader effort to develop grassroots interest in shooting and to prepare Meghalaya’s youth for competitive opportunities — especially with the National Games 2027 to be hosted in the state. The Don Bosco School Indoor Range, designed for 10-metre air pistol and air rifle events, also offers outdoor facilities for .22 and .23 calibre rifles and pistols at a 50-metre range, making it one of the most comprehensive training setups in the region.
Organisers confirmed that similar camps will be conducted regularly across the district to nurture young talent and create a steady pipeline of shooters capable of representing Garo Hills at state and national-level championships. The camp, marked by enthusiasm and curiosity, reflected the growing sporting spirit in the region — one that aims to put Meghalaya on India’s shooting map in the years to come.
