SHILLONG, Oct 25: Shillong MP Ricky J. Syngkon has lauded the prompt response of the Ri-Bhoi district administration and police in addressing the long-standing issue of traffic congestion along the 14th Mile-Jorabat stretch of National Highway-6.
Syngkon said he was pleased to see visible action following his earlier communication to the authorities. “I want to acknowledge the action taken by the district administration of Ri-Bhoi, especially the Deputy Commissioner and the Superintendent of Police,” he stated.
The MP recalled that he had written to the Ri-Bhoi DC on September 15 after personally observing the worsening traffic situation during his frequent travels to Guwahati.
He noted that vehicles, especially heavy trucks, were often parked along both sides of the highway, significantly narrowing the passage and causing prolonged traffic jams.
Syngkon mentioned that he travels without an escort out of concern for public convenience and safety and his firsthand observations had prompted the letter.
“Many a time, the traffic moves at a snail’s pace from 14th Mile to Jorabat. Trucks parked all along the National Highway not only obstruct the smooth flow of vehicles but also endanger others on the road,” he said.
He commended the Deputy Commissioner, Superintendent of Police and their teams for their proactive response in tackling the issue. “I really want to acknowledge the DC, SP, and their team for taking proactive measures in the interest of the people. I hope this action continues and that truckers will henceforth abide by traffic rules,” Syngkon added.
The recent enforcement drive by the Ri-Bhoi district administration is expected to ease congestion and ensure safer traffic movement on one of the busiest highway corridors connecting Meghalaya with Assam.
