Ambulance, e-scooters launched in city

By Our Reporter

Shillong, Oct 26: North Shillong MLA Adelbert Nongrum has called upon the indigenous youth to abandon the mindset expressed in the phrase “In our land, do as you please” (Ha ri lajong leh katba mon) and instead embrace the belief that “in our land, we must stand on our own feet.” (ha ri la jong dei ban ïeng ha la ki jong ki kjat).
Speaking at a function prior to the official launch of an ambulance and E-scooters contributed by the Jaïaw Ehrngiew Transport Society (JETS) on Saturday at Jaïaw Lower Lansonalane, Nongrum urged young people to take responsibility for strengthening the community and society.
“There are times when we must think about the welfare of our community and humanity as a whole,” he said.
Nongrum said, “Personally, I will not abandon my principles, and I urge others not to infringe upon the rights of others. If such rights are violated, peace cannot prevail.”
He lauded JETS and its 24×7 service for its commitment to serving the people.
“In the past, companies came from outside, but today, our own youth have managed to build their own enterprises,” the MLA remarked.
Meanwhile, Jaïaw MDC Denzil Chen described the ambulance as a “life-saving” facility that would extend healthcare assistance to people, especially those in remote areas.
He highlighted the importance of timely medical response, saying, “In matters of health, every second counts — a delay can mean the difference between life and death.”
Chen also emphasised the need for more ambulances across the state. “While Shillong has better access to hospitals, rural areas still face difficulties. More such vehicles are urgently required,” he added.
JETS President and Managing Director Pynskhemlang Uriah stated the society was established in 2020 following observation of a decline in government job opportunities and a rise in unemployment among youth. The initiative, he said, aims to promote self-reliance.
“The launch of the ambulance and E-scooters seeks to serve the public while creating opportunities for unemployed and low-income youth,” Uriah explained. “Those who wish to earn a living but cannot afford their own vehicle can make use of these E-scooters.”
The programme also featured addresses by representatives of the Jaïaw Youth Organisation and the Chairman of Jaïaw Dorbar Pyllun, followed by the official inauguration of the ambulance and E-scooters by the MLA and MDC.
