Mawkyrwat, Oct 26: The Ranikor-Phokroh road was faced with heavy traffic after an overloaded truck got stuck in the middle of an old wooden bridge near Photkroh village, South West Khasi Hills, on Sunday.
It was informed that the incident occurred on Sunday morning as the bridge was dilapidated and on the verge of collapsing. The incident led to a massive traffic jam in the area.
According to the KSU Ranikor Circle, the incident happened in the morning, and no help arrived until the time of filing of this report. The truck remained in the middle of the wooden bridge, causing major difficulties to the people, especially those who were ill and needed to go to hospitals.
KSU Organising Secretary Firstborn Turnia expressed concern over the incident, which resulted from the failure of the authorities to ensure that trucks adhere to the limited weight.
The union urged the South West Khasi Hills administration to take the issue seriously by ensuring that trucks cannot carry more than 9 tonnes, as hundreds of overloaded trucks carrying coke pass through the seven wooden bridges on the Ranikor-Phokroh road every day.
“The government should immediately take action and not wait for the bridges to collapse, or else we will be forced to come out to the street,” the KSU leader warned.
