SHILLONG, Oct 30: The Special Judge (NDPS) of East Khasi Hills, E Shabong on Monday convicted Marvinson Jyrwa and Skhem Kupar Massar sentencing them to six years of imprisonment and imposing a fine of Rs 60,000 under Sections 21(b) and 29 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act for supplying narcotic substances to minors.
In default of fine, they must undergo further Rigorous imprisonment of a year for offence punishable under section 21(b)/29 NDPS Act R/w sec 77 Juvenile Justice Act, the court directed.
Describing the offence as “deeply aggravating,” the curt noted that the accused not only possessed and distributed drugs but deliberately targeted children. The case was investigated by UBSI Anderson Jyrwa.
In another case, the court of Additional Deputy Commissioner (Judicial), East Khasi Hills, DR Kharbteng on Monday convicted Bijoy Hajong and sentenced him to undergo seven years of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 1 lakh under Section 376 of the IPC. He must undergo further imprisonment of four months for offence punishable under section 376(1) IPC Act in the event of default of fine.
The court also directed the District Legal Services Authority to grant compensation to the survivor under the Victim Compensation Scheme.
