SHILLONG, Oct 31: The Sohra Police have arrested nine individuals for allegedly instigating a violent mob that gheraoed the residence of one Ham Shangpliang of Khliehshnong Sohra Thursday night, following unverified allegations of witchcraft.
According to East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem, the incident occurred around 9:30 p.m., when an agitated crowd of about 200 people surrounded Shangpliang’s home, threatening to burn it down and harm the occupants.
Syiem said that the SDPO Sohra, the officer in charge of Sohra Police Station, along with magistrates from Sohra, rushed to the spot after receiving information and took immediate action to safeguard those inside.
However, the team faced strong resistance from the mob. He said that the police were compelled to use tear gas and stun grenades to disperse the crowd and create a safe passage.
Reinforcements, including personnel from the Special Operations Team Shillong, were later deployed to stabilise the situation. During the operation, eight police personnel sustained injuries.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the mob was provoked by the claims of a minor boy, who alleged that he had “visions” of Shangpliang and believed himself to be under a witchcraft spell (“ai ksuid”).
These unverified allegations reportedly sparked fear and anger, leading to the unlawful gathering and violent confrontation.
Thanks to coordinated efforts by the police and magistrates, 22 persons, including minors, were safely evacuated from the house. The group included two other families who had gathered at the residence for a death anniversary memorial service. All evacuees were taken to Shillong Civil Hospital for medical examination.
The SP stressed that such misplaced beliefs are dangerous and can risk innocent lives. He said that a case was registered at the Sohra Police Station in connection with the incident and nine persons were arrested in connection with the incident.
“More arrests are likely to follow,” he added.
Meanwhile, the SP has warned that spreading rumors or inciting people of being Menshohnoh is a criminal offence as it can lead to loss of innocent lives and property.
