SHILLONG, Nov 1: Police in West Jaintia Hills have arrested a 52-year-old man for allegedly assaulting his pregnant wife at Myrjai village near Mukhla on October 27.
The accused, identified as Bigest Chyrmang, allegedly attacked his wife Three Phawa, striking her on the head, neck, and both hands around 3:30 p.m. that day. The victim, who remains in critical condition, is currently undergoing treatment at Nazareth Hospital.
According to Superintendent of Police (SP) Jagpal Singh Dhanoa, the incident came to light after the victim’s brother, Phriwel Phawa, lodged an FIR at the Nartiang Police Station, alleging that his sister had been brutally assaulted by her husband.
Following the report, police launched a manhunt, but the accused had fled the village soon after the assault. After two days of intensive search operations, a team led by Sub-Inspector N. Gurung arrested Chyrmang on October 29.
During the investigation, a panchanama was conducted in the presence of independent witnesses, leading to the recovery of the weapon allegedly used in the crime from a jungle area near Myrjai village.
The SP informed that the accused was produced before the court and has since been remanded to judicial custody.
