SHILLONG, Nov 4: The All Jaiñtia Muster Roll Workers Union (AJMRWU) has decided to await an official written communication from the state government before taking its next step regarding the implementation of the Floor Rate and Variable Dearness Allowance (VDA) for Muster Roll workers.
The decision was taken following a meeting between the union and the Labour Commissioner on Monday.
Speaking to media persons after the meeting, union president Khroo L. Pariat informed that the government has maintained its stance against implementing the revised Floor Rate and VDA, citing a decline in the prices of essential commodities. According to the government, the decision was based on an analysis by the Statistics department, which indicated that the cost of essential goods has dropped due to a reduction in GST rates. It further argued that enforcing the VDA would result in increased expenditure on Muster Roll wages.
Pariat said the union would first wait for a formal written response from the government, as assured by the Labour Commissioner, before deciding on its next course of action.
Meanwhile, the union has resolved to convene a general meeting in Shillong soon to deliberate on the government’s decision and consider legal options, including approaching the High Court of Meghalaya for clarification on the Minimum Wages Act or seeking judicial intervention to ensure a revision of wages for Muster Roll workers.
