SHILLONG, Nov 7: Governor CH Vijayashanka has raised alarm over the increasing cases of drug abuse and teenage pregnancy among the youth in the North Eastern region, urging educational institutions to play a decisive role in steering students towards a balanced and responsible life.
At the National Educational Conference of Don Bosco Schools (NECDBS), an annual gathering of heads and principals from Don Bosco institutions across the North East, Governor Vijayashankar said that the growing social challenges confronting young people demand close cooperation between schools, families, and communities. He called for stronger awareness campaigns, better counselling systems, and protective spaces to prevent students from drifting into harmful habits.
The Governor highlighted that teachers and administrators must adapt to modern demands by incorporating innovative methods and technology-based learning to prepare students for the complexities of the future.
Recognising the contribution of Don Bosco Institutions in moulding generations of learners, Vijayashankar praised their enduring philosophy grounded in reason and loving-kindness. He noted that Don Bosco schools have consistently enhanced the quality of education in the region through improved teaching standards, skill-oriented programmes, and a focus on character formation.
Vijayashankar expressed hope that the NECDBS meet would strengthen collaboration among Don Bosco educators, leading to the exchange of new ideas and a renewed commitment to holistic and value-driven education. He wished the participants success in their efforts to advance the cause of education across the Northeast and the country.
