SHILLONG, Nov 7: The Voice of the People Party (VPP) has strongly condemned what it termed as “excesses and brutality” by the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government against office-bearers and members of the Meghalaya Commercial Truck Owners’ and Drivers’ Association (MCTODA).
In a statement issued by party spokesperson Dr Batskhem Myrboh, the VPP said the government’s action has “no place in a democratic society” and deserves the “strongest condemnation from all quarters.” The party stated that the incident has caused shock and distress among residents of Mawryngkneng, particularly women and children.
The VPP accused the government of instilling fear among citizens instead of maintaining peace and order, while allegedly extending preferential treatment to cement companies. The party also recalled earlier instances of alleged police excesses, including during the public hearing at Thangskai in East Jaintia Hills District and during demonstrations by teachers and members of the public, where tear gas was reportedly used.
Expressing solidarity with the residents of Mawryngkneng, the party lauded their “act of defiance” against what it called an “authoritarian government,” saying it should serve as an example for others to stand against injustice.
Reiterating that peaceful protest is a democratic right, the VPP said the demands of the MCTODA are legitimate and must be addressed. The party further demanded the immediate release of all arrested office bearers of the Association and that all criminal charges against them be withdrawn.
