SHILLONG, Nov 9: The state government is reportedly planning to demolish the iconic Circuit House at Laban, a structure that holds historical significance due to its association with former West Bengal Chief Minister, Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy.
According to official sources, the proposal to dismantle the building has already been approved, and demolition work is expected to begin soon. The move aims to make way for the construction of a new concrete structure at the same site.
“Work to demolish the Circuit House will start very soon. A new concrete building will come up,” official sources confirmed on Sunday.
An inspection to assess the proposal was carried out last year, paving the way for the government’s decision to redevelop the site.
Over the years, the Circuit House — located in one of Shillong’s oldest localities — has undergone several modifications. However, sources indicated that some portions of the original structure still remain till now.
Historically, the site holds deep cultural and historical roots. Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy’s parents, Prakash Chandra Roy and Aghor Kamini Roy, were prominent members of the Shillong Brahmo Samaj. The family owned a residence at Kench’s Trace, which later became the present-day Circuit House.
Many observers noted that the demolition of such a historic building may mark the end of a symbolic chapter in Shillong’s colonial and cultural legacy.
