Shillong, Nov 11: Shillong’s very own Hamiwell Marwein has etched his name among Meghalaya’s most inspiring endurance athletes after successfully completing the IRONMAN 70.3 Goa Triathlon on Saturday.
A resident of Mawlai Mawroh, Marwein conquered the gruelling challenge — a 1.9 km open-water swim, 90 km cycling, and 21.1 km run — within the strict cut-off time. Often called the Half Ironman, the event tests not just physical fitness but mental fortitude, making his achievement a proud moment for the state and a shining example of the Northeast’s growing presence in international endurance sports.
Marwein’s journey to the Ironman finish line was one of discipline and determination. For over a year, he trained relentlessly across Shillong’s hilly terrain and unpredictable weather — a setting that pushed his limits daily. Guided by his mentor, Colonel Jangvir Lamba, a serving Indian Army officer and seasoned Ironman triathlete, Marwein honed his strength, stamina, and focus to prepare for the challenge.
He credited his success to his family, particularly his wife and daughters, whose support, he said, turned his dream into reality. “This journey was as much about my family as it was about me. Their encouragement and faith kept me going when things got tough,” said Marwein.
