SHILLONG, Nov 12: Ten thousand people in Meghalaya have taken part in the Congress’ nationwide “vote chor gaddi chhod” signature campaign.
State Congress working president Deborah C Marak expressed gratitude to the public for the overwhelming support. “On behalf of the party, we would like to thank everyone who supported this campaign,” Marak said.
She also said that the AICC is deeply concerned about alleged electoral roll manipulation, especially after the Maharashtra elections.
Stating that protests were staged across the country, she said, “We have done our part. We organised protests and demonstrations in all districts, including the state capital.”
State Congress general secretary Manuel Badwar highlighted growing concerns over, what he alleged, distortion of public opinion through biased media and electoral malpractice.
“We have seen that in many elections, the actual voice of the people was not heard,” Badwar said. “Certain media houses, often referred to as ‘Godi media,’ are propagating narratives that go against the Constitution and the democratic process.”
He further stated that AICC leader Rahul Gandhi has been vocal and assertive in raising these issues.
“Rahul Gandhi’s campaign has been very aggressive in exposing the manipulation of votes. Recently, it came to light that even photographs of people from outside the country were used to register votes — a clear attempt to undermine the Election Commission and the integrity of the electoral process,” he alleged.
Badwar emphasised that the Congress campaign against vote theft is not a minor issue but a nationwide movement to safeguard democracy. “Power should remain with the people. We believe that there is widespread malpractice in how votes are being registered, deleted, or transferred — all to ensure that the BJP stays in power,” he said.
