SHILLONG, Nov 12: The Nongur Weilyngkut Primary Health Centre (PHC) was locked on Wednesday by the landowners after the Health Department allegedly violated an agreement to provide employment to two members of the family who had donated the land for the construction of the facility.
The health centre, which caters to 23 villages and serves dozens of patients daily, has now been shut down — a move that is expected to cause severe inconvenience to the local population dependent on its services.
The closure follows the termination of Aidolin Jana, one of the family members employed at the PHC. According to the family, the land had been donated to the department under a written understanding signed on June 21, 2017, which stated that two of their members would be offered employment.
Expressing disappointment over the department’s alleged breach of the agreement, a representative of the family, Kdtor Jana said, “The department has violated the agreement made before the PHC was inaugurated. The position of chowkidar, which was earlier held by my sister, has now been given to someone else.”
He added that the family has decided to keep the PHC locked until the department reinstates Aidolin Jana.
“We are not against the health centre, but against the injustice done to our family. Until the government fulfils its commitment, the PHC will remain closed,” he said.
Meanwhile, Aidolin said she received her termination letter in June without any explanation. “We gave our land to the Health Department with the understanding that two of us would be employed. The department has dishonoured that agreement by removing me from service. If they fail to respect the terms, we have every right to reclaim our land,” she asserted.
