Training for Aapda Mitra volunteers begins in Ri-Bhoi

NONGPOH, Nov 12: The District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Ri-Bhoi, on Wednesday inaugurated the second batch of its seven-day training programme for volunteers under the Yuva Aapda Mitra Scheme (YAMS). The training, which began today, will continue until November 19 at Ri-Bhoi College, with participants drawn from the National Service Scheme (NSS).
Expert trainers and resource persons will conduct the sessions focusing on disaster preparedness, response and community resilience.
The inaugural programme was attended by Additional Deputy Commissioner B. Ranee as the chief guest, as well as Deputy Controller of Civil Defence, Nongpoh, BK Swer, DDMO-cum-Nodal Officer (YAMS), J. Mawthoh, along with a group of enthusiastic volunteers.
In her address, Ranee lauded the efforts of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and the Meghalaya government for implementing the YAMS initiative in the district.
She said the scheme represents a visionary effort to train and empower youth to act as community first responders during disasters and emergencies.
Highlighting the significance of the programme, she urged the volunteers to take the training seriously and actively participate in all sessions.
