SHILLONG, Nov 13: In an inspiring story of resilience and creativity, Sbunbha Kharumnuid — a street vendor from Laitumkhrah — on Thursday released her debut poetry collection titled Umpohliew Ka Jingshemphang (The Spring of Wisdom).
The book was formally launched by VPP MDC from Nongkrem, Kitborlang Syiem, at a function that celebrated both the author’s personal journey and the power of grassroots voices in literature.
Pro Vice Chancellor and Head of MLCU Press, Dr Larilin Kharpuri, highlighted that Umpohliew Ka Jingshemphang is the first Khasi-language publication by MLCU Press, marking a proud milestone for the university’s publishing wing.
Sharing his reflections, Parish Priest of Jongksha, Fr. Suresh Kagoo spoke fondly of knowing Sbunbha and her family since 1984. He described her journey from a hardworking street vendor to a published poet as one of perseverance, faith, and divine blessing.
He noted that while academic scholars often publish books as part of their professional requirements, Sbunbha’s achievement—despite her limited formal education—stands as a powerful example of natural talent and determination.
Editor of The Shillong Times, Patricia Mukhim recalled meeting Kharumnuid in the market and being moved by her humility and keen observation of everyday life. She praised the poet for her ability to find beauty in ordinary moments and to write with depth and sincerity.
The event was attended by MLCU Vice Chancellor Dr AA Mao, along with university officials, faculty members, students, and well-wishers, all of whom lauded the release as a significant moment for Khasi literature and community storytelling.
