Locals protest student’s death after 100 sit-ups punishment
Palghar, Nov 16: Locals staged a protest over the death of a 12-year-old girl, who was allegedly made to perform 100 sit-ups as punishment for coming late to school in Maharashtra’s Palghar district. Following the protest, the police registered a case in this regard late on Saturday night. Statements of the family, witnesses and school employees will be recorded, an official said. Locals gathered in large numbers at Sativali in Vasai East on Saturday night and refused to cremate the body of a Class 6 student, who passed away at a hospital in Mumbai on Friday night. The girl was allegedly made to perform 100 sit-ups after she reached the school late on November 8. The deceased girl’s mother has alleged that her daughter died as a result of an “inhuman punishment” given by her teacher, who made her perform sit-ups with her school bag on her back. Locals have accused the school administration of negligence and demanded immediate accountability. (PTI)
Army mulls induction of women cadres in TA battalions
New Delhi, Nov 15: The Army has considered inducting women cadres into the Territorial Army battalions as a pilot project, with their recruitment to be initially limited to a few battalions, sources said on Sunday. The move is aimed at gradually opening up more opportunities for women in the force. According to sources, the Army has considered the induction of women cadres into Territorial Army battalions as a pilot project. Their recruitment, initially, will be limited to a few battalions, and may increase subsequently in other battalions based on initial feedback, they added. The government has been emphasising the essence of ‘Nari Shakti’ in the armed forces. (PTI)
Beed hospital performs its first angioplasty at no cost to patient
Beed, Nov 16: The Beed district hospital in Maharashtra has performed its first angioplasty, with the patient incurring no charges, officials said on Sunday. Angioplasty is a medical procedure used to open narrowed or blocked blood vessels, usually the arteries that supply blood to the heart. A 45-year-old person with a blockage in the heart was the beneficiary of this free life-saving procedure, said Civil Surgeon Dr Sanjay Raut. “The success of this first angioplasty significantly boosts our confidence. We are committed to ensuring that quality, specialised healthcare is not a privilege but a right for every citizen, regardless of their economic status,” he said. (PTI)
10 illegal Bangladeshi immigrants arrested in WB
Krishnanagar , Nov 16: Ten illegal Bangladeshi immigrants were arrested near the India-Bangladesh border in West Bengal’s Nadia district, a police officer said on Sunday. Along with them, two locals who provided them shelter were also arrested, he said. Acting on a tip-off, a raid was conducted in a village close to the border, and the arrests were made. (PTI)
