NONGPOH, Nov 16: A major development awaits the border population of Ri-Bhoi District after Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually laid the foundation stone for an Eklavya Model Residential School (EMRS) at Umsohbar under Jirang constituency in the district.
The project, amounting to ₹64 crore, is expected to significantly enhance educational access for students living in the border region.
The ceremony, held via video conference from Gujarat, was joined locally by Meghalaya Community & Rural Development Minister Sosthenes Sohtun, accompanied by senior officials at the Jirang C&RD Block office.
Sohtun expressed deep satisfaction over the approval of the long-pending proposal. He said he had initiated the process years ago by submitting the necessary documents to the state government. Following the sanction, a site inspection was carried out at Umsohbar to finalise the location.
He informed that the EMRS must be completed within thirty-six months as per the sanctioned guidelines. The school complex will include academic buildings, separate hostels for boys and girls, a basketball court, volleyball court, football ground and other sports facilities.
