MAWKYRWAT, Nov 17: Three drug traffickers were sentenced to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment, along with a fine of Rs 1 lakh each by the Special Judge (NDPS) Court, Mawkyrwat, South West Khasi Hills.
South West Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police, B Jyrwa, in a statement issued here, said that the three convicted individuals — Somison Sangma, Gopal Borman and Gen D Sangma — all residents of Nongkriah village under Mawsynram Police Station in East Khasi Hills, were detained by a BSF Naka team in the Ranikor area on January 19, 2024, at around 10:30 am, after their movements on two motorcycles aroused suspicion.
After receiving the FIR from Irfan Bashir Magrey, AC 193 Bn, Magistrate on duty S Marwein, BDO of Ranikor C&RD Block, along with a police team from Ranikor Police Station, conducted a thorough search of the suspects and recovered nine packets containing 1,728 tablets of suspected Yaba.
A cognizable case was subsequently registered at Ranikor PS (Case No. 03(01)2024) under Sections 22(C)/29 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
The case was investigated by IO A Syiemlieh, ABSI, charge-sheeted on May 3, 2024, and forwarded to the Special Judge (NDPS) Court, Mawkyrwat, for trial.
The SP added that on November 11, 2025, the Court convicted the three accused and sentenced them to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 1 lakh each. In case of default in payment, they will undergo an additional one month of simple imprisonment.
