TURA, Nov 18: Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Tuesday revealed that the state government will install high-mast Tricolours in all district headquarters as he led the official flag-hoisting ceremony at the PA Sangma Sports Complex in Tura.
The programme was attended by West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Vibhor Aggarwal, West Garo Hills Superintendent of Police Abraham T. Sangma and other dignitaries.
Addressing the gathering after hoisting the Tricolour, the chief minister said he felt immense pride in raising the high-mast national flag at the PA Sangma Integrated Sports Complex in Dakopgre.
“The national flag is a symbol of our identity and symbolises our unity, history, sovereignty, freedom and values and hoisting this high-mast flag shows our respect and honour for our great nation India,” he said.
Tura, the chief minister added, is the second location in Meghalaya to have such a flag, with similar installations planned for Jowai and all district headquarters.
Speaking on development initiatives, the chief minister announced that the second phase of the Tura Beautification Project would begin soon, with Rs 16 crore allocated for improvements in the Tura Bazar area, including new street lights, pavement upgrades and an enhanced façade for the Tura Super Market.
The third phase will focus on beautifying the stretch from Araimile Junction to the end of PA Sangma Road.
He urged the people to support the ongoing Paint My City campaign aimed at beautifying buildings, boundary walls and retaining walls.
Highlighting key projects in Dakopgre, he noted that the area is witnessing rapid infrastructure development.
He informed that works for the additional secretariat are going on in full swing.
“Next to the MPSC Office building that was inaugurated last week, works are taking place at a rapid place for the Convention Centre that will be an important venue to host important small to medium scale events and gatherings,” he said.
He also announced that an important infrastructure will come up where the old Orchid Hotel was in Dakopgre. “The first 5-Star Hotel of Tura by the Hilton Group will be an important infrastructure and we expect this hotel to be completed within 24 months,” the chief minister said.
On preparations for the 2027 National Games, he said that work is underway to extend Pa Togan Nengminja Stadium with new galleries and facilities.
According to him, construction is simultaneously progressing on the Multi-Disciplinary Indoor Stadium near the PA Sangma Stadium and the Sunny Hill Indoor Stadium.
Urging public cooperation, he stressed that citizen support is crucial for the success of the city’s beautification and cleanliness efforts.
“It is the responsibility of every citizen to keep Tura town clean without which all other developmental projects or infrastructures will be meaningless,” he said.
Earlier, the event began with a welcome address by Tura Municipal Board chairman JD Sangma and featured performances by local artistes.
The chief minister later flagged off a road-sweeping machine to conclude the programme.
