Guv says India’s strength rests on sacrifices of armed forces
SHILLONG, Nov 21: Meghalaya Governor CH Vijayashankar on Friday said that India’s peace, progress and sovereignty “stand firmly on the foundation of the sacrifices made by the armed forces”, as he led a solemn and dignified ceremony at Raj Bhavan to honour war veterans, Veer Naris and officials of the Sainik Welfare Board. Addressing ex-servicemen, families of fallen heroes and representatives of the Sainik Welfare Board, the Governor delivered a message steeped in gratitude and national pride. He described war veterans as “living testaments of India’s military strength and patriotic spirit, whose service continues to inspire the younger generations.” He also paid a tribute to Veer Naris, stating that their courage embodies “a silent but profound form of bravery”, and emphasised the resilience with which they continue to uphold the legacy of their loved ones. Commending the Sainik Welfare Board, the Governor lauded its tireless work while noting that its dedicated service ensures the needs of the defence community are met “with dignity and compassion”. The programme featured sharing of experiences by veterans, the felicitation of war veterans and Veer Naris by the Governor, and interactive sessions aimed at strengthening support mechanisms for defence families.
NITI Aayog member reviews Meghalaya’s SDG progress
SHILLONG, Nov 21: Member of NITI Aayog, Dr Arvind Virmani, on Friday visited Meghalaya and engaged with various departments to review the state’s progress on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and explore avenues to accelerate development. Dr Virmani concluded a two-day visit to the state, during which he interacted with government officials, stakeholders and local communities to identify innovative pathways for faster and more inclusive growth. The visit focused on strengthening Meghalaya’s economy through sustainable agriculture and agro-industrial expansion, advancing financial inclusion and fiscal management and scaling skill development initiatives anchored in local livelihoods. Discussions also highlighted the need to improve digital connectivity in remote regions, empower Farmer-Producer Organisations (FPOs) and Self-Help Groups (SHGs), and further strengthen the Early Childhood Development Mission. During the visit, Dr Virmani interacted with local artisans at the Shillong Literary Festival and observed the functioning of the Eastern Ri-Bhoi Farmer Producer Company. Key focus areas during his visit included strengthening digital infrastructure, empowering FPOs and SHGs, advancing skill development and promoting organic agriculture.
