SHILLONG, Nov 22: The Dorbar Shnong Mukroh has appealed to the central government to launch the long-pending CBI probe into the 2022 Mukroh incident in which five persons from the village were killed in “Assam Police” firing.
A resolution on the appeal was adopted during a meeting on Saturday, marking the third anniversary of the incident.
The Dorbar met under the aegis of the Office of the Dorbar Shnong Mukroh Pyllun in West Jaintia Hills to pay homage to the victims – Tal Nartiang, Sik Talang, Nikhasi Dhar, Shirup Sumer and Thal Shadap.
According to the resolution, Meghalaya, Assam and central governments had agreed to hand over the case to the CBI soon after the incident. However, the Dorbar noted that “three long years have passed but the investigation appears to be non-starter,” causing continued anguish to the bereaved families.
The Dorbar reiterated that the tragedy stemmed from the unresolved inter-state boundary dispute, alleging Assam “continues to intrude” into the territory of Meghalaya along Mukroh but the state government “remains a mute spectator.”
The Dorbar urged the Centre to ensure early completion of the investigation and delivery of justice. Further, it urged the Centre to resolve the long-pending boundary issue and direct the Assam government to halt any form of intrusion until a final settlement is reached.
The resolution expressed hope that the Centre would listen to the village’s appeal, stating that the people of Mukroh should not be “compelled to stray away from the path of righteousness.”
Copies of the resolution have been forwarded to Union Home Minister Amit Shah through the Governor of Meghalaya, the Governor himself, the Meghalaya Chief Minister, and the Member of Parliament of Shillong parliamentary constituency.
Meanwhile, the HYC expressed dissatisfaction over the pace of the investigation. It urged the Meghalaya government to take immediate steps to ensure that the probe is completed.
The HYC said it stands united in grief and indignation as it remembers the local residents who lost their lives in the incident. The organisation described the act as “senseless” and “inhumane,” noting that it remains an open wound for the community.
The HYC reiterated its demand that Meghalaya and Assam governments ensure a transparent and independent investigation, make the findings public, and prosecute those responsible. It stressed the need for sincere and sustained efforts to resolve the boundary issue.
As it marked the anniversary, the HYC reaffirmed its solidarity with the people of Mukroh and renewed its commitment to pursuing justice. It urged leaders and institutions to act swiftly and justly, stating that justice and peace must prevail.
