London, Nov 23: Aston Villa and Newcastle United produced two of the weekend’s standout performances, with Morgan Rogers and Harvey Barnes emerging as the defining figures in a dramatic round of Premier League fixtures.
Aston Villa turned a precarious afternoon into a decisive victory at Elland Road, where Morgan Rogers delivered a superb second-half brace to deepen Leeds United’s relegation fears.
Leeds, already wobbling with five defeats in six, struck early when Lukas Nmecha forced an eighth-minute opener in chaotic fashion from a Sean Longstaff free-kick. But the hosts’ intensity quickly waned, and once Villa settled, the momentum shifted sharply.
Unai Emery’s side, rejuvenated after a slow start to the season, were transformed after the interval by the introduction of Donyell Malen and Ian Maatsen. Within two minutes of the restart, Malen created the space for Lucas Digne to cut the ball back, and Rogers applied a delicate flick to level.

Barnes at the Double as Newcastle Shock Manchester City
At St James’ Park, Harvey Barnes produced a brilliant match-winning performance as Newcastle stunned Manchester City 2–1 in a high-tempo clash that swung ferociously throughout the evening.
Barnes opened the scoring with a crisp finish from outside the box, but City levelled before half-time as Ruben Dias’ strike deflected off Fabian Schär after Newcastle failed to clear a corner.
Pep Guardiola’s side pushed hard, and Erling Haaland twice came close — once denied by Nick Pope, once lofting wide — while City were left furious after Phil Foden had a strong penalty shout waved away.
Newcastle refused to buckle. Jacob Murphy whipped in a teasing cross, Bruno Guimarães headed against the bar, and Barnes reacted quickest to hook in the rebound. A lengthy VAR check for offside followed; St James’ Park erupted when the goal was given.
It marked a powerful response from Eddie Howe’s men after their defeat at Brentford, and a rare league win for the Magpies over Guardiola’s champions. Newcastle showed renewed energy and steel, with Lewis Hall, Tino Livramento and Malick Thiaw producing standout displays.Barnes, who had earlier missed two glaring chances, embodied Newcastle’s resilience and was given a thunderous reception as he left the pitch. Even late pressure from City — including another smart Pope save from Haaland — could not break the hosts’ resolve.
A Weekend of Revival and Regression
For Villa and Newcastle, the weekend offered renewed hope — Villa’s rise into the top four gathering pace, Newcastle rediscovering the intensity that defined them last season.
