SHILLONG, Nov 24: A bomb scare on the busiest road of Shillong on Monday evening led to widespread panic among citizens after an abandoned backpack was spotted at entrance of the State Bank of India (SBI) Main Branch near Khyndai Lad. It turned out to be a hoax.
Police immediately cordoned off the area and alerted the bomb disposal squad. Police cleared pedestrians and halted traffic around the bank as rumours spread, creating chaos.
The bomb squad was called in, and a thorough inspection of the bag was carried out. Later it was confirmed that the backpack did not contain any explosive material and had simply been left behind by some individuals.
The police later reopened the road and allowed both vehicular and pedestrian movement to resume.
