SHILLONG, Nov 27: A six-month certificate course for in-service untrained Pre-Primary teachers, targeting over 35,000 elementary-level educators who currently lack formal qualifications, was launched by the state government on Thursday. Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui said the initiative is part of the government’s broader efforts to raise the standard of teaching across the state.
Rymbui explained that the Directorate of Educational Research and Training would play a crucial role in delivering the programme, equipping teachers with skills to enhance classroom learning and overall student outcomes. He noted that the government is committed to systematically training all in-service untrained teachers in the state.
The minister also said that the Cabinet has approved the establishment of the Meghalaya Teacher Training Academy, which will provide high-quality teacher education. He added that the academy would focus on curriculum revision, reorientation of textbooks, and updating teaching methodologies to ensure modern, effective classroom practices.
Highlighting the need for students to stay relevant in a rapidly evolving world, Rymbui said the integration of Artificial Intelligence into the school curriculum would be prioritised, enabling students to gain early exposure to emerging technologies.
He described the launch as a significant step towards strengthening foundational education in Meghalaya and ensuring that teachers are better prepared to meet contemporary educational challenges.
