SHILLONG, Nov 29: The upcoming second phase of the IT Park at New Shillong Township is set to host an IndiaAI Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Artificial Intelligence, positioning Meghalaya as an emerging state in the national AI ecosystem.
The Meghalaya government, in collaboration with the IndiaAI Mission under the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY), is working to establish the IndiaAI CoE in Phase-2 of the Technology Park, with a dedicated space of about 10,000 sq ft. Envisioned as a national hub, the CoE will focus on research, innovation, capacity building, and partnerships with industry to develop AI-driven solutions in priority sectors such as governance, agriculture, health, education, and climate resilience.
The IT Department has formally reached out to leading technology companies to join as strategic partners in designing and operating the CoE.
Communications have already been sent to Google, and the department is in the process of engaging with NVIDIA and other major industry players to help shape the vision, technical architecture, and use cases of the centre.
These collaborations are expected to bring advanced tools, training opportunities, and access to global best practices for startups, students, and government teams in Meghalaya.
Under the proposed model, project costs will be shared in a 40–40–20 ratio: 40% from the state government, 40% from the Centre through IndiaAI/MeitY, and 20% from industry partners, ensuring that private players also have skin in the game.
The state has already issued a formal consent to set up the CoE and recently received detailed guidelines from IndiaAI on how such centres should be structured and governed. The template for proposal submission was shared earlier this month, and officials are now working on the final project proposal.
