SHILLONG, Dec 1: As Mukul Sangma reportedly scouts several political parties to finalise his next move, the Congress has reminded him that he had once made it clear he would never return to the party after deserting it ahead of the 2023 Assembly elections.
Asked how the party would reconcile the leadership equation between Mukul Sangma and Saleng Sangma should the former rejoin, Meghalaya Congress president Vincent Pala said politics is dynamic, with “no permanent friends or enemies.”
“We welcome anybody who is ready to come. Congress is nobody’s personal property,” Pala said, adding that Mukul Sangma knows his standing within the party and has himself stated in the past that he would never return.
Pointing out that public support is gradually shifting back to the Congress, Pala claimed that even several leaders who were dropped from the Cabinet are willing to return—provided the party fields strong candidates and works hard on the ground. He also dismissed reports of internal rifts over leadership.
“There are questions about leadership only in the media. Nobody in the party has any issue,” he said, adding that such allegations usually come from those who left the party and needed someone to blame for their exit.
Reiterating that he will lead the party in Meghalaya as long as the organisation wants him to, Pala said he is not someone who can be “bulldozed” by others.
It is learnt that several leaders and workers are likely to join the Congress in January next year.
