SHILLONG, Dec 3: UDP working president and West Shillong MLA Paul Lyngdoh on Wednesday dismissed speculation that he was preparing to leave the United Democratic Party, firmly asserting that he had no intention of quitting despite the growing turbulence within the party.
Addressing the rumours head-on, he said, “These are just conjectures and theories, it has not crossed my mind to leave the UDP because if there is any issue, I believe that such issues should be discussed internally within the party.”
Reaffirming his political stance, Lyngdoh added, “I insist on one point which is throughout my career in the political sphere I have always been a fighter and never a quitter. I will not quit that easily.”
His remarks come amid widening cracks inside the UDP, with several members unhappy over how the recent Cabinet reshuffle was handled.
Speculation is currently rife that Lyngdoh may exit the UDP and potentially join the National People’s Party (NPP).
Lyngdoh acknowledged the growing dissatisfaction, stating, “Of course there are various sections of the party which are unhappy with the way the reshuffle was handed by the party leadership. These are matters which we will discuss internally.”
The discontent stems from his removal from the Cabinet, a decision widely viewed as influenced by the party’s top leadership rather than being based on performance. The unrest deepened when it emerged that just four days before the reshuffle, the UDP had observed its foundation day where party president Metbah Lyngdoh declared that the party had no plans for any Cabinet reshuffle.
Another UDP leader who lost his ministerial berth, Kyrmen Shylla, is understood to have accepted the decision and chosen to move forward.
However, the disquiet within the party remains palpable, signalling that the internal storm is far from over as the UDP grapples with questions of leadership, trust, and transparency.
