DHAKA, Dec 3: A four-member UK medical team, led by Dr. Richard Buell, arrived in Dhaka to assist in treating former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, who remains in critical condition at Evercare Hospital.
The team reviewed her condition and consulted the local medical board to help formulate an advanced treatment plan. Buell, a professor of intensive care medicine at King’s College London, is joined by Chinese specialists already in Dhaka, with additional medical assistance offered by countries including India, the US, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan.
Zia, 80, was admitted on November 23 for heart and lung infections and later moved to the coronary care unit. Her condition worsened, and she was placed on ventilation.
Security around her has been heightened, with Army and Air Force helicopters conducting test landings and her designation as a “very, very important person” under Special Security Force protection.
The chiefs of Bangladesh’s three armed services visited Zia, along with Jamaat-e-Islami chief Shafiqur Rahman. BNP supporters nationwide are holding prayers for her recovery. BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman, based in London since 2008, is expected to return soon, following party discussions on political strategy and upcoming elections. (PTI)
