SHILLONG, Dec 4: In a significant change aligned with a recent directive from the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, the iconic Raj Bhavan in Shillong has been officially renamed as Lok Bhavan.
The announcement marks a shift in nomenclature for the Governor’s official residence, bringing Meghalaya in line with a nationwide move to adopt more people-centric terminology for constitutional offices.
According to a notification issued on Thursday, Principal Secretary to the Governor H.C. Chaudhary stated that the Government of India, through an office memorandum dated November 25, directed the renaming of Raj Bhavans across states.
“Henceforth, Raj Bhavan be referred to only as Lok Bhavan, Shillong,” the notification said, making the name change effective immediately.
