England, Dec 4: Australia’s decision to leave out Nathan Lyon for the second Ashes Test in Brisbane has triggered one of the biggest selection controversies of the series, with the veteran off-spinner admitting he felt “absolutely filthy” after being dropped for a home Test for the first time in 13 years.
Lyon, Australia’s third-highest wicket-taker in Test cricket, was omitted as the hosts opted for a full pace battery for the day-night encounter at the Gabba — a venue where he has traditionally thrived. Cricket Australia’s own website labelled the move a “bombshell”, underscoring the shockwaves it sent through the cricketing fraternity.
Speaking to Channel 7, the 38-year-old revealed that his conversation with selector George Bailey and head coach Andrew McDonald was brief and blunt. “Absolutely filthy,” Lyon said, describing his reaction, before adding that he had stepped back to clear his head and refocus on supporting the team.
