SHILLONG, Dec 4: In a boost to the on-site policing support within the city’s healthcare sector, East Khasi Hills Police has set up a police booth at the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) — the second such facility in the state.
It may be noted that for many years, Shillong has operated with only one dedicated hospital-based police booth located at Civil Hospital.
The addition of the NEIGRIHMS Police Assistance Booth (PAB) represents an important step toward improving public safety and emergency responsiveness in critical medical environments, East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police, Vivek Syiem, said.
The newly established booth, inaugurated on December 1, is positioned near the main entrance of the NEIGRIHMS campus to facilitate in medico-legal cases. Operated round the clock, the booth will be manned by police personnel responsible for any emergency coordination and prompt response to any security-related concern arising within or around the hospital.
Given NEIGRIHMS’ role as a major tertiary care and teaching hospital catering to the entire Northeast region, the newly launched on-site police booth is expected to significantly improve response time and contribute to a safer and more orderly environment.
The authorities at NEIGRIHMS have welcomed the establishment of the booth, noting that close cooperation with the police will further streamline crowd management, enhance safety for medical staff and students, and ensure timely intervention during critical situations.
