HYC calls out govt’s inaction on illegal settlements in Lum Survey

SHILLONG, Dec 5: The Hynniewtrep Youths’ Council (HYC) has slammed the state government and the Defence Estate Officer, Guwahati, for their inaction regarding the persistent issue of illegal settlements at Lum Survey, Shillong — an area long associated with illicit and anti-social activities, particularly drug trafficking, which the group says poses a direct threat to the lives and safety of youths and citizens of the State.
The HYC lamented that despite repeated complaints, memoranda and demands submitted to the competent authorities, no visible or concrete steps have been taken to dismantle illegal structures or curb the rampant drug trade and other unlawful activities flourishing in the area.
“How many more youths must fall victim to drugs before the government opens its eyes?” the HYC questioned.
Pointing out that various jurisdictional excuses between the State administration and Defence authorities have resulted in years of neglect and decay — placing Shillong residents, especially the youths of U Hynniewtrep, at constant risk — the HYC said both authorities are fully aware of the illegal occupation of the land and the criminal networks operating there. Yet, instead of resolving the issue, they have allowed the situation to deteriorate to an unacceptable level.
The HYC reminded the Government that drugs are a major security threat, destroying families, damaging public health and feeding organised crime.
“If the Government and the Defence Estate Office continue to ignore these urgent concerns, the HYC will take necessary actions until every illegal settlement is cleared and the drug network at Lum Survey is dismantled once and for all. The inaction of authorities is no longer acceptable,” the HYC added.
