SHILLONG, Dec 6: As winter slowly sets in and around Shillong, a bright and joyful festive atmosphere is spreading through the city.
Shillong on Saturday recorded a minimum temperature of 7.5 degrees Celsius.
The festive rush has already arrived at Iewduh, the state’s largest traditional market. Lanes are overflowing with cheerful shoppers, with vendors calling out their best prices
The spirit is no different in Police Bazar, where footfall has significantly increased as residents and visitors step out to buy winter wear, Christmas décor, gifts, and holiday essentials. The hawkers’ market inside the MUDA parking lot is witnessing a heavy rush of shoppers.
Many commercial buildings and offices across the city have begun lighting up with colourful illuminations and sparkling decorations. Work has also begun on the grand illumination plan for Police Bazar and its adjoining areas, which transform into dazzling hubs of Christmas magic—complete with vibrant lights, stars, wreaths, and festive art installations.
Although the intensity of the festive spirit will continue to grow in the coming days with Christmas and New Year just round the corner, the blend of chilling weather and warm celebrations is already creating a postcard-perfect atmosphere. Carol groups are expected to hit the streets soon, churches are preparing for their grand services, and pine trees—freshly cut and carefully decorated—will brighten homes across the city.
This season also marks one of the peak tourist periods for Meghalaya. Visitors have already begun arriving, drawn by Shillong’s winter charm and the way the city celebrates Christmas—replete with community feasts, church choirs and twinkling lights.
