SHILLONG, Dec 6: Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong has warned that schools with more teachers than students could be asked to shut down as the Meghalaya government moves to rationalise educational institutions.
Speaking at the golden jubilee celebration of St. Peter and Paul Secondary School in Mawkisyiem, Sohra, on Friday, Tynsong stated that the government has adopted a policy to streamline schools. Institutions that fail to meet the minimum standards set under the state and national education policies implemented in 2019-2020 will not be allowed to operate.
Tynsong noted this warning has been issued previously. He pointed to existing disparities, observing that many well-performing rural schools do not receive adequate government support,
while institutions providing minimal service or not functioning properly continue to receive disproportionate benefits.
The Deputy CM affirmed the government plans to review these inconsistencies to ensure effectively performing schools receive proper recognition and support, both in terms of funding and student outcomes.
Separately, the Deputy Chief Minister clarified that the CM Impact guidebook, intended for matric exam preparation, is solely a guide and not a formal school textbook.
He urged parents and the public not to be misled, confirming the book was prepared and approved by MBoSE. During the celebration, Tynsong commended the school administration for fifty years of service and their role in providing quality education to Mawkisyiem and surrounding villages.
