SHILLONG, Dec 9: The National Highway Demand Committee-South West Khasi Hills District (NHDC-SWKHD) on Tuesday met Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, urging the state government to restore the original double-lane plan for the Mawngap-Mawphlang-Laitmawsiang-Mawkyrwat-Rangthong-Nongnah-Dirang-Khadphra (Ranikor) road under NH-44E.
Speaking after the meeting, committee chairman Kynpham V. Kharlyngdoh highlighted concerns over the proposed downgrade of the 96-km project to an intermediate lane, warning that such a move could undermine regional development.
“This road is a vital economic corridor for around 1,000 villages across East, South West and West Khasi Hills, connecting local communities to markets, health and education facilities and even the international border with Bangladesh,” he said.
Kharlyngdoh noted that similar roads in Meghalaya, including the Ranikor-Maheskola-Baghmara and Shillong-Nongstoin-Tura stretches, have already been upgraded to double-lane National Highways, and the Mawphlang-Laitmawsiang-Mawkyrwat section deserves equal consideration.
He also stressed that the original DPR and approvals were based on a double-lane plan, and any changes now could delay the project and erode public confidence.
The committee appealed for the restoration of the double-lane plan, early resumption of work in cooperation with the NHIDCL and the Centre, protection of the project from any dilution, and a public clarification on the project’s status.
Kharlyngdoh said the committee’s demand reflects the collective concern of various stakeholders, including communities, NGOs, political representatives and local headmen.
He maintained that the road is crucial not only for connectivity but for equitable growth and regional welfare.
