Shillong, Dec 9: With potholes and crumbling stretches plaguing Shillong’s roads, the Meghalaya government on Tuesday announced that re-carpeting work across the capital will begin shortly.
Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, who holds the PWD (Roads) portfolio, said Rs 45 crore has already been sanctioned and work orders issued for the re-carpeting of city roads.
In a review meeting, officials also discussed widening the key Shillong–Umiam stretch. The road will be expanded to 12 metres from Umiam up to Mawlai. A joint inspection of the proposed alignment will be carried out soon, following which a detailed project report (DPR) will be prepared.
Meanwhile, the long-awaited new bridge parallel to Umiam Dam is in the final stages of completion. Tynsong informed that the bridge structure is complete and work is currently under way on the approach roads.
The bridge is expected to be thrown open for heavy vehicles, including night super buses and trucks, from March 2026, he added.
