GUWAHATI, Dec 10: A major fire broke out during the pre-dawn hours of Wednesday in a multi-storied building, housing a high-end shopping mall and a retail assets central processing centre of State Bank of India (SBI), in the Bhangagarh area on GS Road.

Various sections across floors of the structure were engulfed by the blaze even as fire and emergency services personnel rushed to the site and worked relentlessly to control the fire from the wee hours till late evening.

Even as the flames, engulfing the front side of the building could by and large be extinguished by morning, the firefighters left no stones un across the floors throughout the day.

Reportedly, several vehicles were also parked in the basement of the multi-storied building when the fire broke out.

The massive scale of the fire could be imagined from the layers of thick smoke that billowed from multiple sections of the building throughout the day. Several fire-tenders (at least over 25) were pressed into service from the early hours till evening.

No casualties were reported till the filing of the report.

The cause of the fire is yet to be determined with sources saying that a detailed investigation would be conducted once the premises are safe to enter.

A detailed assessment would also be required to determine the extent of damage to property and documents in the shopping mall and the branches of SBI respectively.

“I am worried because my sister has several documents and items in the bank locker, which is why I am worried and came to take stock of the situation,” a woman told the media.
