NEW YORK, Dec 9: New York mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani, the youngest mayor in over a century, announced he and his wife will move into Gracie Mansion in January, citing family safety and the need to focus on his “affordability agenda” for New Yorkers.
Mamdani, a 34-year-old democratic socialist, won last month’s mayoral election by a wide margin after campaigning on housing stability and affordability.
Currently living in an 800-square-foot subsidized Astoria apartment, Mamdani faced criticism for his rent-stabilized housing despite earning $142,000 annually.
He expressed fondness for his Astoria home and community, highlighting its diverse culture and neighborhood charm.
Gracie Mansion, by contrast, offers high security, East River views, and expansive entertaining spaces, including a grand dining room and a full-time chef.
While Astoria is an affordable, family-friendly area, the Upper East Side residence provides safety, official facilities, and the environment necessary for a mayor to host events and focus on city governance, which influenced Mamdani’s decision to relocate. (Agencies)
