Shillong, Dec 10: Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong has reassured the public that law enforcement agencies are maintaining strict vigil across Shillong, even as concerns persist over alleged illegal activities linked to suspected illegal settlers at Lum Survey.
Stating that the area falls under the jurisdiction of the Shillong Cantonment and is categorised as defence land, Tynsong said the state government and district authorities are taking no chances on matters relating to the city’s security.
He maintained that the district administration is working in close coordination with the Chief Executive Officer of the Shillong Cantonment Board to assess the situation.
“We are holding discussions to monitor and engage with the residents. At the same time, the district administration is checking the antecedents of those living in the area. The police are fully active in finding out what is happening and who these people are – if they are illegal immigrants,” Tynsong said.
According to him, several NGOs have raised concerns over possible illegal settlement, drug peddling and other activities that may threaten public safety.
He stressed that the administration is treating the issue with utmost seriousness. “We are aware of the concerns. The police are working tirelessly to ensure that nothing unlawful takes place. We will not allow Shillong’s security and peace to be compromised,” he said.
Tynsong said the matter is currently before the court, with the Shillong Cantonment Board and the state government having filed their affidavits. He said that further administrative or enforcement action will be taken as per the court’s directions.
He reiterated that the government remains committed to addressing the issue responsibly and lawfully.
