SHILLONG, Dec 11: The Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) on Wednesday hosted the first-ever state-level observance of International Human Rights Day in Tura, shifting the celebration from its customary venue in the state capital, Shillong. This year’s programme was held under the theme ‘Human Rights, Our Everyday Essentials’.
Speaking at the event, PHE Minister Marcuise N. Marak emphasised that human rights extend beyond legal protections to include ensuring a dignified life and improving people’s livelihoods. He urged all stakeholders to treat the protection of human rights as “society’s everyday essentials” vital for building a stronger and more vibrant democracy.
Marak also called on the district administration, police and officials of various departments to uphold human rights principles while discharging their duties and serving the public.
MHRC member Heimonlang Nongpluh, reflecting on both global and local human rights progress, highlighted the Commission’s work since its establishment in 2016.
He noted that the MHRC has remained a vigilant guardian by investigating violations, advising government departments and ensuring prompt action on its recommendations.
The programme was attended by Dr Vasanthi Vijayakumar, Vice Chancellor of Captain Williamson Sangma State University, as the guest of honour, MHRC Secretary L. Ch. Marak, retired District and Sessions Judge and MHRC Member Baffindalyne Giri, West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Vibhor Agarwal, and DIG (Western Range) JFK Marak.
