Argentina park echoes with 2,397 golden retrievers’ joyful barks
BUENOS AIRES, Dec 11: A historic gathering of golden retrievers unfolded in an Argentine park as 2,397 dogs congregated, setting a new unofficial world record for the largest assembly of the breed.
The cacophony of barking could be heard from miles away, as dog owners of all ages, their clothes covered in hair and slobber, settled on picnic blankets to enjoy the surreal spectacle.
Children delighted in petting the retrievers, while families posed for selfies under the hot Southern Hemisphere sun.
The event provided a space for owners to share stories about their dogs, highlighting the breed’s famed loyalty and ability to sense medical conditions such as low blood sugar and cancer.
Nicolás Orellana, 26, described his 13-year-old golden, Luna, as a lifelong companion, emphasizing the deep bond the breed creates with families. Many dogs were dressed in festive costumes, including Argentine soccer jerseys, tutus, Star Wars bandanas, and national flags.
Event volunteers meticulously registered each dog, ensuring accurate counting for the world record attempt. After hours of effort, organizers confirmed the final count of 2,397 golden retrievers, surpassing last year’s record of 1,685 set in Vancouver.
Fausto Duperre, the 28-year-old organizer and social media influencer, described the milestone as historic, noting the challenge of photographing the massive group due to the dogs’ restlessness and owners’ need to keep their pets close.
Despite initial fears of chaos, the gathering proved to be surprisingly orderly, reflecting the breed’s gentle nature.
Elena Deleo, 64, praised the affectionate and calm temperament of the dogs, noting that there were no fights or aggressive incidents.
Participants spent the day enjoying the camaraderie, swapping tips, and celebrating their shared love for golden retrievers.
The event not only highlighted Argentina’s growing dog-loving community but also celebrated the unique bond between humans and their four-legged companions.
The record-setting assembly offered a joyful and heartwarming glimpse of the breed’s popularity, while also reinforcing the reputation of golden retrievers as affectionate, gentle, and social animals that thrive in the company of people and other dogs alike. (AP)
