New Delhi, Dec 12: A loud and clarion demand for removal of North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) Vice-Chancellor Prof. Prabha Shankar Shukla was made before the Union government on Thursday when VPP MP Ricky Andrew J. Syngkon sought his immediate sacking, branding him “incompetent” and absent from campus for a record 392 days.
Raising the issue during Zero Hour in the Lok Sabha, Syngkon accused Shukla of administrative failure, unethical appointments, neglect of infrastructure, plunging rankings, and remote interference while drawing full salary.
Syngkon reminded the House that NEHUSU, NEHUTA, and the non-teaching staff of the university have declared the VC persona non grata, forcing him to stay away from campus—and the state—for over a year through relentless protests, hunger strikes, and resignations. He pointed out how the crisis has worsened with the recent resignation of the Registrar in-charge, who cited unbearable workload and constant interference by the absentee VC.
The MP urged the Ministry of Education to make public the ongoing inquiry report and appoint the senior-most professor as acting VC to end the leadership vacuum.
