MAWKYRWAT, Dec 13: The proposed transfer of senior officers from South West Khasi Hills has drawn objections from two pressure groups, the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) Mawkyrwat Circle and the Hynniewtrep Achik National Movement (HANM) South West Khasi Hills District, which have warned that the move will halt critical development in the district.
Speaking to the media on Friday, general secretary of the KSU Mawkyrwat Circle, Plosbor Kharjahrin said the Union learned that the state government plans to transfer Superintendent of Police (SP) B Jyrwa and Executive Engineer PWD (Roads) Mawkyrwat Division, J Nongsiej. Both officers have been posted in the district for less than a year.
Kharjahrin alleged that the MDA-2 government plans to replace SP Jyrwa with an officer from outside the state. He argued that bringing in a non-local officer would badly affect the administration and police functioning, noting that residents prefer local officers for smooth communication, which is often hindered by language barriers.
The KSU leader claimed that frequent rotation of top officials has repeatedly hampered the growth of the South West Khasi Hills. The Union demanded the government immediately hold the proposed transfers and allow both officers to work according to the standard terms set for state officials.
President of the HANM South West Khasi Hills District, Lambokstar Marwein reinforced the opposition, specifically citing SP Jyrwa’s key role in containing the drug menace. Marwein praised Jyrwa as one of the best officers the district has had and requested the government halt the plan, stating that the officer still has unfinished business fighting drugs and other local problems.
Marwein echoed the concern that appointing an officer from outside the state would create significant communication issues, preventing the police department from securing the necessary cooperation from the general public.
